1999 DCEP/WHO/FAO collaborating effort for the prevention and control of selected parasitic zoonoses.

A special meeting of some experts and representatives of WHO and FAO was organized by the Danish Center for Experimental Parasitology in Copenhagen; DA Vuitton and P Schantz participated in this meeting. Significant parasitic zoonoses, in terms of Public Health and Development, were selected with special focus on the continents/regions where their specific prevalence were of concern. Echinococcosis was of course among the "top ranking" parasitic zoonoses, in nearly all parts of the world, and was chosen as "model zoonosis" for the Northern African area. A comprehensive report has been prepared in Rome at FAO by H. Carabin and M. Kachai, on behalf of the group of experts. This report will be sent at the ery beginning of 2000 to WHO and FAO authorities as well as to all governmental institutions in charge of Public health and Veterinary Public Health in all countries concerned by the (larely underestimated) problem of parasitic zoonoses.

It must be noted that echinococcosis has also been selected among the 7 "zoonoses of European importance" (irrespective of the nature of the agent) for the Report on Zoonoses of the Scientific Committee "Veterinary Measures relatin to Public Health", European Commission-DG XXIV/SANCO.
